Eureka - inputrc is your friend. Set up a basic on in /etc, exported
INPUTRC=/etc/inputrc in /etc/profile, and all the keys now behave
themselves.

As for the euro symbol problem, I'm still trying to figure out how to
change the console font. Ah well - it can't take much longer, can it? -)
