By strange coincidence, I roasted one of the two USB ports on my
server box last night while installing a
motherboard-header-to-actual-pair-of-sockets thingy. The problem was
that the header was 4-pin, the connector on the thingy was five-pin,
and neither the motherboard documentation nor staring at the
motherboard would reveal which way the okay-to-over-hang-this-pin end
of the connector should point. So I plugged it in and did a magic
smoke test, and lo, the magic smoke escaped. At least it didn't
destroy the USB hub I was testing with (about the least expensive USB
toy I have).
