[ILUG] vmware and dd'ed copies of disks

hi,

simple question: how do you get vmware to boot or even use files that
are just images of entire hard disks.

eg, dd if=/dev/hda of=.../foofile.img

how do you get vmware to use it? i've tried all combinations of
vmware's disk types with these files, and also with loopbacks of these
files but no joy.

is it because it needs to be in vmware virtual disk format? if so, how
do you convert an image to a virtual disk???

(assume you can not mount the filesystems contained in these images in
linux)

thanks in advance,

--paulj
