Not to beat the Perl drum too loud :-) but why do you want to stop and
restart the process at certain times ? If it's because during those times
you have no real interest in the data then another small mod. to the Perl
script could make it only save files during certain times - at other times
it would just throw away the data. If you've some other requirement that too
could of course be catered for.
