Hmm.

"Stubbornly" does kind of imply that I'm refusing to implement
subscribers-only due to some sort of unjustified personal prejudice.
Which is not the case.

In short, the reason is: ilug at linux.ie has been widely disseminated
as a "useful source of Linux information" - the ILUG's PR group has
concentrated on this at shows, BOFs, LAIDs and so on. As a result, we
get quite a few emails from people who aren't subscribers, and a lot
of these are first-timers. I do not want these people being
discouraged by automatic mails from Mailman saying "you must subscribe
first", and likewise I have enough queue mails to moderate each day
without having to approve each of these manually. The amount of Spam
received on the lists is not so great that it should cause problems
for anyone; in fact it's *tiny*; almost all of it is already moderated
out by my existing filters, and I'll be throwing Justin's SpamAssassin
into the mix shortly, too.

Mailman is quite nice in theory, but in practise it's quite
time-consuming to administer a Mailman list. I'm considering Sympa as
a possible alternative for some future date; it looks as though it
will be better for collaborative administration etc.
