Having tried your suggestion, I get the following...
/etc/init.d/lpd restart
Stopping lpd: [ OK ]
Starting lpd: Warning - ** cannot open '/var/log/lpd-errs' - 'Permission denied'
Warning - cannot stat 'if' filter '/local/etc/psif-generic' - No such file or directory
[ OK ]

Its a HP 4000 N.
This is really started to get annoying, as I'm having very little luck with CUPS as well...
