Just a note in passing: People need to get out of the habit of using
/usr/src/linux for kernel compilation, despite what it says in old
documentation to the contrary:

http://linuxmafia.com/~rick/linux-info/usr-src-linux-symlink

Do your kernel compiles basically anywhere that's convenient -- e.g.,
right in your non-root-user home directory, if you like -- but leave
/usr/src/linux (if present at all) the way your distribution-maker left
it: It might have glibc-compatible kernel headers in it (though those
should be gradually being moved out to more-appropriate places).
