[ILUG] wierd file handle problem

[ILUG] wierd file handle problem

John P. Looney valen at tuatha.org

I've a box I'm monitoring with netsaint/cacti. It seems that every few
days, the number of file handles used (according to /proc/sys/fs/file-nr)
goes up - by a few thousand. And doesn't come down.

The only thing of note running on the box is postgres, and I've restarted
that in the hope it was something squiffy with that - no luck. I really
don't want to have to reboot, as this box is a production machine.

lsof reckons there are 700 files open. the kernel reckon's it's 15500 or
so. How can I reconcile this ? Could it be a bug in the kernel ? (2.4.9
RH7.2 kernel).

John
