I tried logging back in as root (feel the power!!), but still no joy. 
Also other off-list suggestions to add or comment out parts of my 
XF86Config-4 file didn't work.

I've been doing some reading on project GATOS 
(http://gatos.sourceforge.net) which has yielded some updated ATI 
drivers, so I'll try them.  The livid-ati mailing list has been quite 
educational (including a de-lurking post by our very own Waider!!)

Thanks for the help on & off list - I'm now fairly convinced it's 
something to do with the standard xf86 mach64 driver.  Am now boldly 
going to break my X system.
