Found the culprit! Seems to have been insufficient RAM. I stopped a
few non-essential services, closed down all other apps in X and tried it
again - worked fine.
Rather than try and make the system memory tight (which sounded too much
like hard work) I just slapped in another 128Mb. Problem solved (albeit
not very neatly).
