two things occur to me here:
1. specifically with the above, 'w' forces wide output regardless of destination
2. try /usr/bin/ps rather than simply ps to avoid aliases and functions and
whatnot.
This is a non-issue for me since I type 'w' by habit, but may be of use to the
original poster in terms of datapoints.
