You make it sound so simple. My conversations with eircom reps are loosely
based around me telling them that I don't need nor require a router and them
trying to tell me that it is my only option... boggle. I will inquire about
the speedtouch home in that case.

No one is selling them over here at the moment, however you can order them
over the internet. A better idea than the USB Alcatel , might be the Alcatel
Speedtouch Home, which is fairly close in price, and operates over an
Ethernet, so there is little configuration necessary. Eircom is supplying
these.
