I haven't read this full thread yet, I'm behind on mail but everything I
have read so far is sed or regexp based. That struck me as strange, why
not just append the changes to a temp file and run diff on them? That will
give you a patch that can be reversed with one line. If the configuration
file changes all over the place, it'll still apply with offsets, unless
the inserted lines get changed, in which case sed won't work either.
