if anyone's interested:
Filesystem 1k-blocks Used Available Use% Mounted on
 /dev/hdb3 9321616 1634448 7213656 19% /
 shmfs 192116 0 192116 0% /dev/shm
 /dev/hda5 192736 76216 116520 40% /data3
 /dev/hdb2 9645676 4058572 5097124 45% /home

that's a newly installed SuSE 8 machine, with full KDE3 and StarOffice 5.2.

add to that swap, and you're just out of space on a 2G drive, but I haven't
tried to optimise for space at all (it has KDE, WindowMaker, MWM, etc) on it.

(there's 223M in /usr/share/doc, and I'm sure ghostscript could be done away with,
and just use a central print server...)
