try installing the wvdial rpm then run 

wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf

it will search your ports for a modem and tell you if it finds one

then you can edit /etc/wvdial.conf to configure internet dial up

oh and suse to rh is pretty harsh - i'd reccomend mandrake
