So this leads to the following question ....
If it is legal to duplicate the cd media does anyone have
a copy of version 8 profesional which they would be willing
to duplicate or lend to me (want to get my old man using the linux).
Various bribes will be offered in return.

On commercial bundles such as SuSE Datbase server (live IBM database
engine), and SuSE Firewall on CD (they ship you the OS on CD, no
install), and other servers such as domino etc.... yes. Its per seat.
On linux distro's, including personal, professional, and even the
extremely expensive enterprise server, you buy the distro and do with
it what you please. But the support package that comes bundled with
the distro is per seat, obviously thats where the cost of the
enterprise server comes from, the added support, not sure how they are
going to know if you seek support for multiples instances of it, your
next door neighbour might have problems though....
