The brand of modem is not entirely prohibitive, just the chipset.

Lucent did not get renamed. Agere was a subset of Lucent technologies and
has broken away to form a seperate company. Since June 1st both now exist.
As regards the shareholders, they received a certain proportion of Agere
stock with the split.
