 thanks for the hint!  as it so happens, my approach blew up in a
 number of subtle fashions in the intended application (albeit it
 worked Ok standalone) --- part of a multi-locale/charset interface
 to the nmh-1.0.4/MH.6.8 MUA --- so that I had to rethink much of
 the design ....  ;-(

 the approach I'm now using, whilst it has not (yet) migrated into
 LESSOPEN, probably could make that step, which does appear to be
 the next(?) natural step.  in other words, I quite possibly will
 switch to a LESSOPEN script.   again, thanks for the comment!
