[ILUG] Package dependencies

[ILUG] Package dependencies

Ah true its not really problem these days, but
I remember using some truely woeful quality
GUI rpm interfaces that would moan about
dependancies that are already met or
just hang when you try to install anything or
myriad other wonderful surprises.

Yes the kernel is obviously the most important
to be optimised, but those who will benefit most
from it's optimisation will probably be the sort of
people that re-compile/update their kernel anyway.

Ayup. RedHat provides per-processor compiles of the kernel and glibc,
which are probably the two most effective places to go for your
performance tweaks.

Well, not if the tool you're using /is/ the package manager :) To be
honest, I've not actually seen a tool that overdoes the dependencies for
RedHat. I've been irritated by tools that go the opposite direction,
i.e. they tell you there are dependencies but don't automatically
resolve them, but that's neither here nor there.
