i'd guess that there's no user (aka in /etc/passwd) on bartender.
but beyond guessing i'd probably try to diagnose the problem by doing:
# ps aux|grep inetd
(note inetd/xinetd pid)
# ltrace -f -o /tmp/argh -p <pid>
(try connecting then press C-c, then read through /tmp/argh looking
for str* functions and getpw* functions)
