[ILUG] Resistence is futile

[ILUG] Resistence is futile

Hi all,

A wee girl from NYC is over at our gaf on her holliers, cousin of the missus, and she wanted to check her mail and stuff on the net, as you do. So not having any doze running, she used my Mandrake 8.1 workstation.

To my surprise she wants to replace doze with linux when she gets back home. She had no help from me at all, OK I connected her to the net, as you have to ssh to daddybear and start it that way. I like things that way. I thought this would have put her off but no.

She immediately got adjusted, knew where to click, without help, to launch the browsers, very intuitive she says...

All she uses doze for is her ADSL net connection [drool] and photoshop. I showed her the Gimp, but not being into that type of thing I was a bit clueless. She seemed to cop onto immediately as it seems similar to photoshop - or so I'm told.

Anyway, I didn't even try evangalising, its was the fact that my box hasn't crashed since she arrived that did it for her. She says that her doze falls over every half-hour in NY. Which pisses her off immencely as she lives in chat rooms, irc and such stuff.

I have seen there are many irc clients available in linux, Mandrake installs loads by default, but I've never used one. OK I have an ICQ account, but have not accessed in years - literally.
Whats the current state of these things in Linux?

Config help anyone, I haven't even launched them yet, what about proxy config? Do I have to let some port or other through? I would like to demo this for her before she leaves.

Later
CW
