ps without "w" options chops at 80 characters *only* if the output is
a tty; if it's a pipe, it assumes infinite width. Lots of
applications do things like this - ls is the most obvious example (ls
writes one-file-per-line if the output isn't a tty; if it's a tty, it
formats into columns). The behaviour makes sense if you think about
it.
