Yep, Debian is configured to not allow any regular user access to
fancypants devices by default.  To change this, add yourself to the uh..
cdrom, disk, and floppy groups (I think - I haven't got a Debian box near
me to check these names).  Best look in /etc/group to see which other ones
you might need to be added to.
