btw, if you're interested...

the debian Xsession system runs ssh-agent as part of the xdm login sessions, so you always have it...

(and you could be really evil, and do something like:
. ~/.ssh_env
[ -f /proc/$SSH_AGENT_PID/cmdline ] && exit 0
# start ssh-agent here if you want
)

that might avoid the ps aux stuff... and I think it's portable?
