maybe, the postinst script(.deb has them, and so does rpm AFAIK) could
have changed some permissions on you. you have to make sure the modules
ide-scsi, sr_mod and a few more.
also make sure that cdrecord is suid root(chmod u+s /usr/bin/cdrecord)
and you are in the cdrom group (/etc/group).
