i had a similar idea a number of years ago.  not a gui coder so no idea
how to do it though.  my thinking was to make a wm that used an html
widget to manage the root window.  you could use it for browsing the
fs or for browsing the web.  i like the idea of the virtual desktop -
that way you could have multiple views.

plus editing a desktop would be as simple as firing up an html editor
(like vi for instance...  :)  ).
