Depends on your vi variant; elvis on debian seems to be particularly
rabid about invading your private notions of how vi should work. I use
"set normal" to turn off pretty much everything. At least, I think
that's what I use. I have only one debian box to contend with, and I
recently stuck emacs on it to avoid having to deal with either elvis
or nvi (the latter doesn't seem to know about the cursor keys and
insists on only responding to hjkl).

And I'm too lazy to take my own advice and RTFM on an editor that
should work the same way as it did ten years ago, dammit.
