Just thought I should mention that Computer Systems in UL (you are aware
there is universities outside Dublin, yeah?) covers Linux from 1st year on
with basic programming. The operating systems modules use Linux as an
example implementation (used to use Digital UNIX). Windows programming is
covered later in the course. It's mentioned in the OS modules as "Windows
we think does it like this" so there is a certain amount of diversity.
A year or two ago when there was huge pressure to graduate programmers,
the course went to shit, but it's improved a lot again and covers a number
of different disciplines. Remember, that a computer science course should
provide a student with a framework that they can learn more from. It
should be reasonably diverse rather than gratuating people that are
experts in all fields. It is unreasonable to expect all computer science
graduates would be stellar programmers, system architects or
administrators but you would expect that they could become experts in a
relatively short period of time.
Just thought that assering Course X is shit because it omits dealing with
Module Y which is how things would be done if "I ran the world"
