I've always found pdisk to be a great program.  To get something in
Apple_Free, just delete an existing partition.

l /dev/hda to view layout on first IDE disk
e /dev/hda to edit this disk
    p   to print the partition table (same as l above)
    d 8 to delete partition #8 (for example...)
    w   to write
    q   to exit
q to exit

Reboot.  When you boot back up again, the apple_free partition will be
there. BTW, if you delete #7,8,9 they will merge to form one apple_free
slice to play with.

As to why pdisk isn't reporting on your disk, I don't know.  Try 'L'  this
will list all devices.
