There's a very good reason for this. If you leave it firewalled and
drop packets destined for the port, SMTP services will often slow down
significantly due to attempted ident lookups. It's much better either
to leave it open and have nothing running on it, or else (better still),
firewall it, but configure your firewall to return an RST so that the
remote end doesn't spend all day trying to open a port which can't be
opened.
