I recall a time, not so long ago, when there was one 'terabyte memory'
accessible to the academic community in the US, at NCAR (National Center
for Atmospheric Research, in Boulder), and it consisted of a barn-sized
building full of washing-machine-sized hard disks.
(The upside of the operation was that if you could find your way to the
place, they would generally let you have a few free hours on their Cray so
you could put reasonable estimates of computer usage into your next grant
proposal.)
