Even if they were, all it really means is the source code and
specs of *some* system were placed in escrow. No guarantee
that's what's running in every polling station and count centre.
The question remains - how do I know when I push a button on an
electronic ballot box, my vote will be accurately reflected in
the outcome?
The open source idea of "many eyes" functions in the current
system because everyone can see and understand how a vote cast
travels all the way to the outcome, and can consider the
possible flaws or breaks in the system. (Vague attempt at
bringing this back on topic)
Bruce Schneier wrote an article on this after the Florida
outcome where he suggested an electronic vote for a quick
result, but a paper copy was the definitive outcome. There are
interesting links from this article to others on the topic.
