Yup : it's only software, it's open-source, and the algorithms are
commonly understood and not that hard to re-develop. They also have
checksums built in to make sure you're doing it right.
The print-and-scan idea completely eliminates all questions of
hardware from the retrieval.
That said, I freely concede that it's a royal pain in the arse from
the point of view of someone trying to read it in 5 years' time, so
a high-quality CD-R or three in an opaque box with a handful of
that silicone crystal stuff wouldn't go amiss.
