If it were slackware I'd.
Boot off the installation cd ... mount the root filesystem
Then chroot to the mounted fs.
This should drop you to a root console inside the distros root.
Then passwd to your heart's content.
This is how I got around that exact problem a few months ago... so it should
work for you
