Given that the RPM format already includes compression (at least, I'm
pretty sure the archive portion of an RPM file is, in fact, a compressed
cpio archive), I don't know how much more compression you'd get over the
existing files. Have a look:
[root at localhost RPMS]# ls -l kernel-smp-2.4.9-e.3.i686.rpm
- -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12631834 Sep 24 12:08
kernel-smp-2.4.9-e.3.i686.rpm
[root at localhost RPMS]# gzip -9 kernel-smp-2.4.9-e.3.i686.rpm
[root at localhost RPMS]# ls -l kernel-smp-2.4.9-e.3.i686.rpm.gz
- -rw-r--r-- 1 root root 12490081 Sep 24 12:08
kernel-smp-2.4.9-e.3.i686.rpm.gz
Cheers,
Waider.
