Hmm right.
Have you tried simply doing the install of the base system and not
configuring networking etc?
It sounds like you have a hardware problem, perhaps a few bad sectors or a
an irq conflict somewhere. You could try removing ISA cards and simply
running the box from a boot at the console, without running sshd or even
brining up eth0 etc, just to see if it is the hardware, a kernel issue or
something else.
Since it does sometimes boot all the way to a console though I'd be inclined
to think it's not some module somewhere segmenting but, rather hardware.
Run gwscan or similar utility on the hard disk to verify it has no bad
sectors, then start removing pci & isa cards, (otherwise) you should
probably compile your own version of 2.4.19 with (just what you need and
nothing else compiled in) assuming you are running the stock kernel supplied
with SuSE.
