Hello,
I reckon that you install ACPI on your laptop with a brand new kernel
(yep, 2.4.19 will do), that's the only way i got sound working properly
on my laptop, check out my page and go the the ACPI website.

Basically, once you get acpi installed and booting, you should be able
to install alsa properly, which distro do you use btw ? If you use
gentoo, a simple : emerge alsa will do, otherwise on debian, use
alsaconf but make sure you are using alsa 0.9x
