if you have smartctl you probably have smartd too, and possibly
/etc/init.d/smartd (on RH at least). Enable that, i'm reasonably sure
it polls SMART data on a regular basis and i'm guessing it syslogs
any badness it finds - from where your normal syslog
parsing/reporting tools should hopefully alert you.
