Ah, you must be back from holidays!
In the end, I patched the source of smartctl to return a return code if
it didn't pass a test, and then added a cron.daily script to the package.
So, I now have smartsuite RPMs that mail me when there is a problem. I
hope. I've not had any disks fail on me yet :)
