all the ones i looked at were too complex.  i butchered one i found that
is very simple.  i added rotation abilities and comments - to use it you
need to login and it wants an ssl server (though that could be stripped
out too).

i need to go back and hack at it some more to add back support for mpegs
(and animated gif thumbnails of same).  and i'd like to remove the need
for linking the script to every dir.  and it assumes all the pix will
be a sane size, so i want to add a link to a 640x480 bounded picture in
the cases of the picture being too big.  and it needs to name cached
thumbnails with a leading , so my generic weeklu cronjob will cull
old ones.  and the image viewer should be an html page with links to
prev and next, not just the jpeg itself.

ah, the todo list...
