I'm as yet undecided about what to base the eXpo CD on. Knoppix 3.3,
3.4 or Kanotix!
The cebit CD has some content which cannot be redistributed, so I would
NOT want to hand it out (though from what I understand it is trivial to
remove)! Obviously Klaus will release a public 3.4 soon enough, but
I'm not so sure it is actually really that close to ready, I suspect the
public 3.4 might be fairly different to the Cebit release. I think he
really wants to wait til he can make 2.6 the default kernel (just a
hunch) and there's too much hardware not across yet. I really could be
totally wrong on all that, its just a guess. Maybe he's saving that
for Knoppix 4!
I'm currently seriously considering using Kanotix as the base for the
remaster. It's more debian (i.e. packages from debian repositories)
from the outset then Knoppix is, and it seems to be getting plenty of
attention from Knoppix developers (like Fabian). It is a Knoppix
remaster itself and I am pretty sure that Kano who produces it already
has his hands on the relevant parts from the Cebit release.
Whatever I use I am fairly certain I will end up making some non-trivial
changes anyway (for example using debians openoffice to de-germainse it
and perhaps a kernel recompile for some "irish" usb dsl modems) to make
it a bit more Irish targetted, and once I've started yanking at bits it
isn't really knoppix anymore (nor kanotix) so I might as well use
whatever seems to have the best balance of features and stability to
start with.
Any other words of wisdom you picked up will be gratefully accepted, you
can send them direct if there's too much profanity for the list,
profanity is fine by me!
Niall (-: Walsh :-)
p.s. just before I posted I went to see if Knoppix 3.4 had been released
yet behind my back and it hasn't ... but a remaster which had been for
sale (but with a postal strike I wasn't bothering to order it) has
finally appeared on an ftp (I can't believe it's not a bit torrent even
if the hosts have been selling disks for a few weeks) so in a few hours
time I'll have myself something to look at so I can make a decision.
