Others on the list seem to have no difficulties, so I guess it could be
down to my hardware / software combination. My mb is a couple of years old
and has taken a bashing in several house moves.

I run a windows 98 (arrgh!) partition to play the odd game, and rarely if
ever connect it to the internet. I used the USB modem through it while
figuring out how to get it working under Linux.

True, but the guy asking isn't being given it, and for €120 odd Euro I'd
like something to work. I picked up the speedstream because a. I'm
frivolous with my money and b. it was a bargain. I don't regret it.
