Kill all unnecessary services. Make sure the sgi_fam/fam process is running

I would compare your system to one which was running windows 2000 server in
terms of resource usage.

I do not think ( I know) that windows 2000 server would run very fast on a
system such as that.

Perhaps it is time to take a trip to the credit union.
