4-way stops are a sheer stroke of genius, Ireland really should
have these.

But nowadays, the driving situation in Ireland has gone waaay off-track.

Sure, you can hop in a car and drive on a learner's permit, but you'll
eventually have to pass the test -- and you'll never get your license
unless you drive at a ludicruously high standard -- one which, as far as I
can see, nobody in Ireland actually drives at. (Which raises the
question, how did they all get their licenses? How many amnesties
were there?)

Moving from Dublin (good public transport) to Orange County (public
what?), I've had to learn how to drive over here; on several occasions
I wound up explaining to my driving instructor that whatever he'd just
done would have resulted in his failing the Irish driving test ;)

PS: didn't Ireland bring in a written test for the provisional license? in
that case, it's now the same as the US (apart from Ireland's
over-difficult test and the massive test queue).

PPS: anyone who thinks that Irish drivers are worse than those in the US,
hasn't had the pleasure of dealing with LA's freeways. My favourite
move? The tinted-window SUV performing a sudden, no-indicator, 3-lane
swerve. niiice.
