Something tells me I must have run an apt-get upgrade or something similar
yesterday while under the influence of alcohol, and perhaps typed "yes" or
"ok" without reading what was about to happen.

nothing, PuTTy closes after about 20 seconds. No errors in its log, or
anything else helpful.

I had cleared the client keys to see if that made any difference.
