$PRIOR_FIRM bought VAIOs for a while, and issued them to employees who
needed to spend time on the road. (They later switched to ThinkPads.)
I bought my own, circa-1998 used Sony VAIO PCG-505TX at roughly the same
time, and took care to treat it as if it were made of Steuben crystal.
(After all, it was my hard-earned money.)
All the rest of those machines were broken by 2001. Mine's still going
strong, and I'm using it as a console at this very moment. Thus, my
theory is that treating mine very delicately made all the difference.
