I would hedge a bet that "some software company" has a product that
"only runs" on RH6.1.

I've heard that argument before from customers but its not the reality. 
Unless the software has a _kernel_ driver, then there is no reason that
I can tell for such a requirement. 

The only reason that they would say such a thing is that they have only
tested (certified) RH6.1 with the product.
