I use this to obtain my router's public ip address:
ROUTERIP=`/usr/bin/wget --quiet -O - 
'http://user:password@10.0.0.1/doc/home.htm' | grep st_wan_ip | cut -s -d '"' 
-f2 | cut -d '<' -f1`
