Server in a secondary school with novice administrator (me)
started using a linux server this year as our main server for intranet
(apache) and fileserving (samba). It has been fast and reliable. It also
runs MySQL and PHP.
However, last week it seems to have slowed down but I can't trace the
problem.
When users load up the intranet homepage (from linux, XP or win98) it
takes about 15 seconds whereas in the past it was instant. It doesn't
make any difference if you use the ip address rather than the server
name.
When a user tries to save a document from staroffice to the server it
can take about 10 seconds to load the save dialog whereas before it was
instant. The default for saving is to the students home folder on the
samba server
Access speeds to another samba server and an older MS webserver have not
slowed down so I reckon it is something to do with this particular
machine and is not a networking problem.
Tried a different network card and restarting various services but no
change.
Any suggestions on what I should be looking for and how to look for it.
