As in a traceroute wouldn't leave eircom.net network, or any site other
than eircom.net wouldn't resolve? I had neither problem last night anyway.

If it was DNS related, it was probably because it was doing a reverse
lookup on (and borking) on the IP. So the traceroute would still get a
normal reply, just when it comes to display the reply it gets the
reverse domain name for the IP, and it was probably that that took the 10s).
